Abstract

The accumulation of hazardous organic pollutants in the environment severely threatens the health of human beings as well as the safety of ecosystems. Efficient removal of organic pollutants has become a hot research topic with great importance, and the search for superior methods still continues in science today. In this chapter, we introduce the recent progress that has been made for the treatment of organic pollutants using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). First, a brief summary of the methods for MOFs synthesis, postmodification, and composite fabrication will be introduced. Considering the practical use in environmental science, the stability of MOFs in water will be specially discussed. Moreover, the multiple roles MOFs play in the removal of organic pollutants are highlighted. Owing to their unique properties such as the inorganic–organic hybrid nature, high surface area, and versatile functionality, MOFs have shown great promise in detection, capture, and degradation of organic pollutants.
