Abstract

Laboratory #7, Questioned Document Examination, introduces the student to various techniques used by the forensic document examiner (FDE) to analyze evidence. Each specific form of analysis is identified and explained to illustrate the techniques used to enhance writing. The two main pieces of equipment, the electrostatic detection device (EDD) and the video spectral comparator (VSC), are explained based on the type of document case presented to the forensic examiner. Handwriting analysis is explained with information on how to analyze a sample or collect an exemplar for comparison purposes. The chapter ends with a laboratory exercise to show proficiency with analyzing handwriting, collecting exemplars, and packaging document evidence with the completion of required paperwork.
