Abstract
Delivery of therapeutic agents directly to the diseased sites is of utmost importance in efficient treatments of various diseases. Along the same lines, implantable drug delivery systems (DDSs) made from biocompatible polymers showed great promise in locally treating diseases such as cancer. To this end, these DDSs can offer on-demand delivery of drugs in response to various environmental factors (such as temperature or pH) or external stimuli (such as electromagnetic waves, laser pulses). Consequently, in this chapter a comprehensive review of biopolymeric implantable DDSs, with special focus on intelligent DDSs, for treating variety of diseases is provided.
