Abstract

Solid-state refrigeration technology based on the electrocaloric effect has advantages of high efficiency, environmental friendliness, light weight, low cost, and easy miniaturization. It could be an ideal technology for the replacement of traditional compressor refrigeration. Ferroelectric perovskites that produce large polarization changes upon application or removal of an electric field are ideal materials for preparing solid-state refrigeration devices based on the electrocaloric effect. In recent years, the increasing human need for environmental sustainability have made research on the electrocaloric effect of lead-free bulk ceramics one of the hot spots in the field of ferroelectric materials. This chapter reviews the electrocaloric performance of lead-free perovskite bulk ceramics and mainly focuses on the unique advantages and challenges of BaTiO3-, Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-, and K0.5Na0.5NbO3-based lead-free bulk ceramics in cooling applications. Trends in the development of ceramics for the electrocaloric effect are also mentioned.
