Abstract

This chapter examines the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The German theologian and author Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) is perhaps one of Germany's most influential religious thinkers of the twentieth century. Bonhoeffer was reared in a comfortably off educated family; The humanity of Jesus for him literally meant being there for others. Most scholars would agree that Bonhoeffer's biography is woven inextricably into the fabric of his theology. The immediate response to Bonhoeffer's work was not great, that is to say, there were difficulties concerning its publication, and there was the stress of the Great Depression (Weltwirtschaftskrise). Bethge explained that there was a personal drive behind Bonhoeffer's endeavor to establish the word of God in a sociological community. The 'Jewish question' (die Judenfrage) had made Bonhoeffer reluctant personally to engage in any discussion of Weltanschauung with the National Socialists. Keywords: Dietrich Bonhoeffer; God; Jesus; National Socialists
