Abstract

Web-based communication is an important aspect of academic life. Most users are probably familiar with email, but might have trouble managing it, as more and more communication has been pushed to email. However, there are other ways for users to communicate. This chapter will explore some of those tools, which include instant messaging services, such as those provided by AOL, Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, and Microsoft. It will also discuss clients which allow users to communicate across multiple chat services. Video chat services, such as Skype and Google+, will also be explored. This chapter will additionally discuss Internet Relay Chat, an older method of synchronous text-based communication that still has applications today, and will also address strategies for managing email.
