Abstract

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Child and adolescent psychiatrists need to be aware of the risk for SUD and the age of onset of SUD in young people with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Child and adolescent psychiatrists need to be prepared to assess for SUD and associated risks in young people with high-functioning ASD. Child and adolescent psychiatrists also need to be familiar with the SUD treatment system and modifications for SUD treatment that may be needed when working with young people with co-occurring high-functioning ASD and SUD.
