Abstract

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) is thought to have a role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory and neuropathic pain including lumbosacral radiculopathy. TNF-alpha is a cytokine produced mainly by activated macrophages and T cells in response to inflammation, and by mast cells and Schwann cells in response to peripheral nerve injury. REN-1654 belongs to a chemical class of compounds known as benzamides and has been shown to act as a functional TNF-alpha antagonist in vitro and in vivo.
