Abstract

The 6th International Symposium on Antimicrobial Agents and Resistance (ISAAR) was held in Singapore on 6–9 March, 2007. This is the first time that the conference has been held outside Korea. The meeting was hosted by the Asian-Pacific Research Foundation for Infectious Diseases (ARFID) and organized by the Society of Infectious Disease (Singapore) in collaboration with many other international societies of infectious diseases and chemotherapy and professional organizations. The International Organizing Committee comprised Jae-Hoon Song (Samsung Medical Centre, Korea), Ban Hock Tan (Singapore General Hospital, Singapore), Walter Wilson (Mayo Clinic, MN, USA), Robert Moellering (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, MA, USA), David Livermore (Health Protection Agency, Centre for Infections, UK), Merle Sande (University of Utah, UT, USA), Keichi Hiramatsu (Juntendo University, Japan), Victor Lim (International Medical University, Malaysia), Nanshan Zhong (Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Diseases, China) and Sin Yew Wong (Gleneagles Medical Centre, Singapore). Keynote speakers and invited speakers hailed from Australia, Asia, Europe, and North America. In total, there were approximately 1200 delegates from 48 countries. The theme of the conference was ‘Antimicrobial Resistance: Searching for Solutions’. There were a total of 18 symposia, and five keynote lectures, structured around this theme, as well as poster presentations. In addition, there were nine satellite lunchtime symposia, and a breakfast symposium, plus the 6th Investigator Meeting of the Asian Network for Surveillance of Resistant Pathogens (ANSORP).
