Abstract

A summary of neonatal pulmonary function principles and the traditional, as well as state-of-the-art, measurement techniques and instrumentation. Topics covered include the basic concepts and theory of how air is moved into and out of the lungs; instruments used for measuring and characterizing the various pressures, flows and volumes, as well as body surface measurements involved with respiration; definitions and descriptions of pulmonary function parameters and their derivations; theoretical concepts used in analysis and processing of these variables to extract quantitative information for evaluation of pulmonary function status in health and disease.
