Abstract

Primary cicatricial alopecias (PCAs) are heterogeneous disorders characterized by the replacement of hair follicle (HF) structures by fibrous tissue, leading to permanent hair loss. The underlying pathogenesis and treatment options are poorly characterized due to the lack of preclinical research models. The asebia mouse, which harbors mutations in the stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (Scd1) gene, was previously proposed as a model for PCA, however, the immunopathogenic mechanisms underlying permanent hair loss in Scd1−/− mice are largely unknown.
