Abstract

Unattended traumatic experiences can have a long-term negative impact on individuals with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD). This presentation will focus on identifying and addressing the long-term effects of trauma, including the recent pandemic, in children with intellectual disabilities. In a case-based discussion, Shikha Verma, MD, will discuss the long-term effects of the initial trauma, including diagnostic challenges that arise from unconventional presentations in children with intellectual disability. Dr. Verma will offer a survey of recommended evidence-based treatment strategies and offer approaches to intervene early to assist individuals with special needs who have been exposed to acute stressors, with the aim of avoiding chronic trauma responses, especially when resources become scarce, as in the recent pandemic. From this presentation, child and adolescent psychiatrists and other healthcare providers will become more vigilant and sensitive to trauma presentations in children with intellectual disabilities. This can lead to earlier and more accurate diagnosis and rapid, responsive early intervention in children with intellectual disabilities. Child and adolescent psychiatrists and other healthcare professionals must be more adept in looking for and addressing variable presentations of trauma in individuals with intellectual disability and stay informed about available resources, strategies, and treatment options in this population.
