Abstract

Children with intellectual development disorder (IDD) experience increased rates of stressors, negative life events, and trauma, which often present in externalizing behaviors. The underlying trauma is often not identified. This presentation aims to increase the efficacy of treatment for children with IDD through the recognition of trauma in this population. Jill Hinton, PhD, will review the literature on the prevalence of trauma, identify the most common types of traumatic experiences in IDD, and describe challenges in diagnosis. Findings from a PTSD screening study in Systemic, Therapeutic, Assessment, Resources, and Treatment (START) crisis prevention and intervention programs will also be shared. Through this presentation, participants will gain an understanding of the prevalence of trauma and stressor-related disorders in children with IDD and how undiagnosed trauma can lead to misdiagnosis. Recognition of the prevalence will lead child and adolescent psychiatrists to better assess for trauma, understand the impact, and incorporate this into treatment planning for children with IDD.
