Abstract

The Fitzpatrick skin type (FST) scale is a subjective method used for skin type classification, but data suggests that it may not be as accurate in those with darker pigmentation. Colorimeter scales can be used to provide more objective classifications of skin type. Colorimeter measurements of L*, a*, and b* variables signify pigmentation, position on the red/green spectrum, and position on the yellow/blue spectrum, respectively. In this study, we sought to correlate objective colorimeter measurements with subjective FST.
