667 A facial treatment cleansing device enhanced delivery of topical skin care products

Abstract

New cosmetic products are introduced for sale almost every day demonstrating improvement in many skin attributes. To satisfy and retain consumers, personal care companies continually research and develop new and improved products. Additionally, there are other products or devices that may enhance the efficacy, improve ease of use or consumer appeal of current products. For example, skin exfoliation can provide a boosting effect to topical skin care products that are subsequently applied. Skin exfoliation may be done by chemical exfoliators like glycolic acid or by physical exfoliators like sugar scrubs. Recently, we developed and launched a novel mechanical facial treatment cleansing device with accompanying treatment cleansers, that will exfoliate the skin by gently stimulating desquamation and removing debris from the face, maintaining and contributing to improved skin health. An 8-week, IRB approved clinical study was conducted to evaluate whether improved skin surface texture by a device could enhance the effectiveness of a subsequently applied topical skin care serum. Thirty female Asian subjects between 40 and 65 years of age with Fitzpatrick I to IV used the skin treatment cleansing device on a randomized half of their face while using the topical serum combination on their whole face. Clinical grading, subjective self-assessments and digital imaging captured the improvement during the duration of the study. After 8 weeks there were statistical differences between the serum only side compared to the device with serum side for many skin attributes; appearance of fine lines/wrinkles, hydration, texture, clarity, luminosity, radiance, smoothness, softness and firmness were all improved as assessed by clinical grading. This clinical study demonstrates the ability of a commercially available skin treatment cleansing device to enhance the efficacy of a topical skin care product applied following use of the device.
