Abstract

Using the medical record to determine if a patient has count recovery (i.e. engraftment, complete remission, hematologic improvement) is not always straightforward. Checking if the patient met the criteria for complete remission or hematologic improvement, can mean reading through many lines of lab values to see if the counts recovered for the sufficient amount of time. For platelet engraftment, there are also transfusions to take into account. By copying or manually entering these values into a spreadsheet, macros can be used to calculate the recovery dates in a much quicker fashion. For platelet recovery, a macro can determine first if the values drop below 20. It then goes through the platelet values to see if there is recovery. If a platelet transfusion is given, the macro looks for recovery ≥7 days after that. The macro can also determine an estimated date for platelet recovery if necessary, or if platelet recovery was not achieved or was never below 20. With complete remission, a different macro reads through the values until a date with ANC above 1, Platelets above 100, and Hemoglobin above is 11. It then checks to see if counts stay above this level for 4 weeks. This is a more efficient way to see if the count recovery requirement of a CR for MDS are achieved.
