Abstract

The new epicenter of the ongoing Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) epidemic is the southern United States. The emergency department (ED) has been emphasized as an unique and effective venue for screening patients for HIV. Our South Carolina based health system has operated a generalized “opt-out” HIV screening program in two of our major EDs for four years using support from the Frontlines of Communities in the United States (FOCUS) program. The objective of this study was to identify the number of missed opportunities (MO) for HIV diagnoses within our screening program and assess for any significant associated patient characteristics.
