Abstract

EDFA is an important class of the optical amplifiers. As optical amplifiers operate in the optical domain and provide amplification without the conversion of photons to electrons. The gain and noise figure of EDFA is dependent on wavelength. So the gain varies with wavelength. Also the gain is dependent on the length of EDFA used in configuration, pump power applied to EDFA, and the pump wavelength to EDFA. In this paper the EDFA is implemented for a 64 channel DWDM system to achieve a flat gain spectrum for wavelength range of 1565 nm to 1590.2 nm for a channel spacing of 0.4 nm. The maximum gain obtained is 26.71 dB and the minimum gain is about 25.35 dB. Thus the variation is 1.36 dB and the noise figure varies from 4.35 dB to 3.54 dB. The minimum bit error rate is nearly 1.967×10-9 and the quality factor (Q-Factor) is 5.88
