Abstract

Depression is prevalent among adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN). Depressive symptoms often worsen with weight loss and malnourishment, hindering recovery. It is unknown whether a vegetarian diet, consumed by about half of girls with AN, may be associated with a higher depression index or other mental health problems. We undertook a study to evaluate differences in dietary intake for vegetarian (V) and non-vegetarian (NV) adolescents with AN, and to assess whether there was an association between dietary preference, nutrient intake, and mental health problems (depression levels and anxiety).
