Abstract

This chapter illustrates the usefulness of two-polymer phase systems for the fractionation by partition of blood cells by the successful resolution of red blood cells of different ages, the separation of red blood cells from white blood cells and of granulocytes from lymphocytes; the demonstration of changing membrane surface characteristics of normal reticulocytes during maturation in the peripheral blood and the absence of such changes during maturation of reticulocytes produced by animals under stress (e.g., phenylhydrazine injection).
