Abstract

In the authors' previous study on ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation method, longitudinal wave velocity propagating in the plastically deformed medium under pure shear were heavily dependent upon the point defects induced by cross slip. In the present paper the effects of surface roughness and crystal orientation on the amount of cross slip under pure shear state were studied via finite element polycrystal model. The investigation revealed that the amount of cross slip was heavily dependent upon the crystal orientation; however, the surface roughness showed no such apparent effect on the amount of cross slip than that crystal orientation did. The current study also revealed that the surface processing, for example polishing or machining would change the crystal orientation at the surface, which would affect the amount of cross slip during the plastic deformation.
