Abstract

Background. Riehl,s melanosis is a skin hyperpigmentation characterized by grey-brown reticular pigmentation on the face and neck. Many treatment protocols for Riehl's melanosis have been tried in patients, little of which achieved satisfactory achievements. No single treatment has been proved to be the most effective. Aim. To analyze the efficacy and safety of the triple combination therapy (IPL, HQ, TNA) in treating Riehl’s melanosis. Methods. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 46 patients with Riehl’s melanosis from 2011 to 2015. The patients were treated with multiple sessions of intense pulse light, oral tranexamic acid 250 mg, and topical 2% hydroquinone cream. A 5-point scale Physician Global Assessment was performed based on photographic images taken at baseline and follow-ups. Results. Among 46 patients, 21 patients (45.65%) demonstrated marked improvement. 11 patients (23.91%) showed slight to moderate improvement. And 8 patients (17.39%) have no improvement. During the treatment, no serious adverse events related to the combination treatments were reported. Conclusions. This combination treatment method could be an effective and safe treatment option for Riehl’s melanosis.
