Abstract

Authors: Rouzanna Burton, University of Missouri, Timothy Patrick, University of Missouri, Ben Boedeker Telemedicine systems aim to provide quality health care services to persons whose access is otherwise restricted by geography and environment. The US armed forces have had a long-standing interest in mobile health and telemedicine services. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, technologic progress provided the military with the ability to establish integrated health care delivery networks in many areas of the world. Telemedicine provides high quality and cost-effective health support. Telemedicine was established at the Harry S Truman Memorial Veteran's Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. The initial Telepain clinic was conducted in May 1997 when Dr. Boedeker saw a patient from Kansas City, MO. The patient was diagnosed after the evaluation as having Causalgia (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type II) secondary to a nerve injury induced by a gunshot wound. The Telepain Clinic has grown to comprise an average of 25 patients per week seen at distant sites located at Wichita, KS; Marrion, IL, and Kansas City, MO. The electronic medical records link the virtual pain clinic with the distant primary care team. Review of clinical encounters for the past 280 telepain patients showed that the top 5 diagnoses were:
