Abstract

Acute transverse myelitis (ATM) manifests as sensory, motor or autonomic dysfunction due to inflammation of the spinal cord. Common causes of inflammation include post radiation myelopathy, cord infarction, infections, multiple sclerosis or related to systemic disease. Recent diagnostic criteria for acute transverse myelitis by the Transverse Myelitis Consortium Working Group propose a definition for “idiopathic” ATM. Signs, symptoms, time course of progression and evidence for inflammation consistent with ATM are specified for inclusion criteria.
