Abstract

This session aims to review the use of geosocial networking applications (GNAs) among sexual-minority adolescents, as well as associations between use of GNAs and psychopathology. Literature from both adults and adolescents was reviewed regarding the prevalence of using GNAs and associated psychopathology. Original data will also be presented. Using data from a large nontargeted web-based sample (N = 4203), we examined demographics associated with the use of GNAs. Using multivariable logistic regression adjusting for demographic differences between users and nonusers, we examined associations between GNA use, anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 [GAD-7]), and compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD; Harvey-Bradshaw Index 19 [HBI-19]). Based on literature review, an estimated 1 in 4 sexual-minority adolescent males report using GNAs. Of these, 69% reported having sex with partners met on these apps, and of these only 25% reported using condoms consistently. Adolescents consistently report using GNAs to connect with others like them and to explore sexual orientation and intimacy; however, existing GNAs are primarily geared toward adults and are sexually focused, presenting potential risks. In our web-based sample, GNA users were more likely to be male and nonheterosexual. GNA use was associated with CSBD but not anxiety. GNA use is common among sexual-minority adolescents. These adolescents use this app to fulfill developmentally appropriate needs (ie, exploration of identity and intimacy); however, existing GNAs are marketed toward adults and are not geared toward their developmental needs, which presents potential risks. GNA use appears to be more common among nonheterosexual males and is associated with CSBD. Future research is needed to better understand this association, including whether GNAs promote CSBD through intermittent ratio reinforcement, and whether the use of GNAs represents a symptom of CSBD.
