No study was found on LUTD in patients with Down Syndrome (DS). We evaluated the presence and characteristics of LUTD using Dysfunctional Voiding Score System (DVSS) in patients with DS. METHODS One hundred and two DS patients followed at our institution were evaluated and 71 were eligible to complete DVSS questionnaire. Children in diapers and those with lower urinary tract anomalies were excluded. RESULTS Male to female ratio was 2:1 and age was 19.31 ± 12.17 range from 4 to 57. Overall incidence of LUTD was 23.9%, being more frequent in children younger than 10 years of age (40% LUTD) than patients over 10 year (16.3%). OR=3.54[1.13-13.08] 95%CI (p=0.03). DVSS inversely correlate with age in both sexes although slightly more marked for boys(r = -0.433)(p=0.039), than for girls(r= -0.341)(p=0.021). LUTD was more prevalent in females despite no significant difference (Female 29.16% and male 13.04%). Symptoms referred in question 8 (“push to pee”), when present, and symptoms referred in question 4 (“push for bowel movements”), when not present; indicate the greatest positive (LR+=17.4) and negative (LR-=0.25) likelihood ratio for DS patients have LUTD. CONCLUSIONS There was a high prevalence of LUTD in DS patients. As younger these patients are greater their chance of having LUTD, which seems to have an improvement of voiding symptoms as they get older. Although not significant, women tend to have a higher incidence of LUTD. © 2012 by American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails Volume 187Issue 4SApril 2012Page: e244 Advertisement Copyright & Permissions© 2012 by American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.MetricsAuthor Information Flávia C.C.
