Abstract
A key defining aspect of American families is the story by which ancestors arrived on US shores. Those experiences vary widely, particularly among asylum seekers, refugees, and international adoptees. The foundations of our immigration system and their probable roots in imperialism, capitalism, racism, and classism will be considered. The goal is to travel through history to explain the problems as they exist today and also provide an introduction on the history of international adoption.
