Abstract

Platform Configuration Register (PCR) is a TPM internal register that contains a 20-byte digest that represents a host system's software and hardware configuration metric. This metric can be set before system deployment and monitored throughout the systems lifetime with regard to any change in the hardware and software configuration. If the system detects a change in its configuration or a change in the corresponding PCR, then the system can take action. Thus, the system has the capability to protect itself from malicious attacks on it. This chapter describes PCR in detail. A PCR register can protect either a host system's hardware or software configuration, and generally there are 16 PCRs available for use within the TPM—8 for hardware and 8 for software. The 16 PCRs in each TPM monitor the configuration of 8 hardware and 8 software host system capabilities and detect changes in each of the entities.
