Abstract

‘Looking at art’ surveys the physical properties of artworks and how they influence the ways in which we understand artworks as objects. Different media and techniques of producing art are discussed. Sketches and drawings, tempera painting, oil painting, and sculpture are described, examples given, and techniques explained. What is one of the oldest mediums? What ancient types of paint and pigment are still in use today? Why was the introduction of oil paints revolutionary, and how did the commercial manufacture of oil paint in tubes facilitate the development of modern art? It is useful to read this chapter in conjunction with the glossary at the end of the VSI.
