Abstract

The international standard for equality in family relations is potentially at odds with Sharia-derived family law in five main areas: the right to enter into marriage (including full consent in marriage, minimum marriage age and marriage registration), rights during marriage, rights with regards to children, the dissolution of marriage, and the ownership and acquisition of property. In most of the areas covered by this analysis, Egypt's family law does not treat women as equal in rights to men; in some cases their rights are clearly subordinate, while in others they are evidently superior. Inheritance law is one of the few areas of law that is largely derived from the explicit text of the Quran. Because inheritance is based on a number of complex formulae and dozens of different configurations, only a brief overview of the rules affecting women's inheritance is possible.
