Abstract

‘Democracy and dictatorship’ is concerned with the choices of a group, which is taken to be at least three people. Group choice examines the properties of constitutions, that is, the ways in which members' preferences are taken account of in determining group choices. The best known constitution is that of democracy, or majority rule. The Borda rule, Pareto rule, independence condition, neutrality condition, unanimity condition, responsiveness condition, and anonymity condition are explained. Then patriarchal and dictatorial constitutions are described along with Arrow's impossibility theorem, a fundamental result in choice theory. It is impossible to have all of the four properties: rationality, independence, unanimity, and non-dictatorship.
