Abstract

Recent research suggests important seasonal patterns in youth psychiatric emergency department (ED) use, including increased visits in the fall compared with those in the spring and summer. However, this research is limited by the use of statistical methods that do not account for well-documented racial and ethnic disparities in mental health service utilization. Nonwhite youth are significantly more likely to use psychiatric emergency services and less likely to use outpatient services than their white peers.
