Abstract

The purpose of this study was to establish normative data of hand grip and key pinch strength among 6 to 14 year - old Chinese students. The Jamar dynamometer was used to measure grip strength and the Jamar pinch gauge was used to measure key pinch strength. Among the 1643 students examined ( 864 males , 779 females ) , there were 10 males ( 1.16 %) using left hand for writing , 36 males ( 4.17 %) using mainly the left hand during exercise, 11 females ( 1.41 %) being used to write with left hand , and 23 females ( 2.95 %) using the left hand mainly during exercise. The mean grip and key pinch strength varied any different age groups. The strength showed a increasing trend with increasing ages. The key pinch strength in Chinese students was similar to that of American student, however, the grip strength in Chinese students much lower than in American students. The mean grip strength and key pinch strength of the left hand was about 90 % to 100 % of those of the right hand. The mean grip strength of the females was about 81 % of the males, while females mean key pinch strength is 80 % to 90 % of the males. The effect of injury and having been an athlet on the performance of hand strengths was also examined.
