Abstract

A new monomer, 5-indanyl acrylate (IdA), has been synthesized from the precursor viz., 5-indanol, and characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopies. Homo- and copolymerization of IdA with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) have been carried out in benzene by free radical polymerization at 70 °C utilizing 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN). Poly(IdA) and IdA-GMA copolymers were characterized by 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR, and the copolymer compositions were evaluated by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The reactivity ratios were estimated using Fineman-Ross, Kelen-Tudos and extended Kelen-Tudos methods. The Q and e values for IdA have been determined adopting the Alfrey-Price scheme. By TGA and DSC analyses, the thermal properties of the polymers have been studied.
