Abstract

Electronic absorption, excitation and time-resolved emission spectra of Tb 3+ in the cubic elpasolite host lattice Cs 2NaYF 6 show that the 5D 3– 5D 4 cross-relaxation is due to an electric quadrupole-electric dipole mechanism. The donor Tb 3+ ion transits from 5D 3 to 5D 4 whilst the acceptor ion transits from 7F 6 to 7F 2 with the emission of an odd-parity phonon.
