Abstract

Depression is a common comorbid disorder in youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with reported prevalence of up to 10% in adolescents. It is important to identify and treat comorbid depression in youth with ASD. Diagnostic assessment methods for depression in youth with ASD will be discussed. Evidence-based treatments for depression will be reviewed. Although there are no controlled trials of antidepressants for depression in youth with ASD, medication treatment is often needed. CBT has shown some benefit. Increased awareness of the comorbidity of depression in youth with ASD may improve early identification of depression. Controlled trials of antidepressant medications and psychosocial interventions are needed to identify effective treatments for youth with comorbid depression and ASD.
