Abstract

Medical marijuana is an emerging therapy in dermatology. Cannabinoids can be separated into endocannabinoids, phytocannabinoids, and synthetic cannabinoids. In this presentation, the experiences of a clinical group with over 150 dermatology patients treated with medical marijuana are reviewed, and encompass a variety of conditions, including but not limited to psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and acne. The latest medical literature, including indications for medical marijuana, mechanisms of action, possible adverse effects and ethical dilemmas are also reviewed. In addition to the previously listed dermatological conditions, potential uses of marijuana in dermatology include skin cancer and seborrheic dermatitis. Treatment with medical marijuana has also been investigated in difficult to treat conditions such as scleroderma, pruritus, Kaposi Sarcoma and hidradenitis suppuritiva.
