Abstract

It has been reported that 6% to 10% of all dermatology visits are caused by contact dermatitis. This includes both irritant and allergic causes. Topical therapeutic agents are an important potential cause of both irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. This has been termed contact dermatitis medicamentosa. Contact dermatitis should be suspected in any pruritic or painful cutaneous eruption that is refractory to conventional therapy. Using a regional approach, it is possible for the clinician to develop a better idea of the potential contactants before patch-testing. This chapter uses a regional approach to explore potential causes of contact dermatitis medicamentosa.
