Abstract

Schwann cells, which surround myelinated/nonmyelinated sensory neurons, play critical roles in sensory transmission, nerve regeneration, and wound healing. Recent studies have revealed the presence of specialized forms of Schwann cells, called terminal Schwann cells, in the upper dermis and peri-follicles. However, how these terminal Schwann cells differ from other Schwann cells and what they do in the skin remains unknown. This study aims to establish the novel classification of cutaneous Schwann cells by using single cell gene expression analysis and characterize terminal Schwann cells.
