Abstract
Dislocation structures of fatigued copper and stainless steel crystals were observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) optimized for electron channeling contrast imaging (ECCI). With a help of the ECCI technique, one can detect dislocations underlying near surface of a bulk crystal. After fatigue tests, self-organized dislocation patterns such as persistent slip bands (PSBs) were successfully observed in both the copper and stainless steels. In addition, the ECCI technique revealed evolution of dislocation cell structure around a crack tip at which the observation with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been difficult.
