Abstract

The prescribing of psychotropic medications for youth in foster care has come under close scrutiny over the past 2 decades. The state of Connecticut’s Department of Children and Families (DCF) developed the Centralized Medication Consent Unit (CMCU) in 2007 in the context of such scrutiny and under a mandate from the state legislature. The CMCU is staffed by child psychiatrists and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) employed by DCF, providing informed consent for psychotropic medications for youth for whom DCF is the legal guardian. The audience will learn about how the unit was conceived, how it functions, and the challenges in maintaining such an oversight unit within a state agency.
