METHODS Retrospective chart review from 2002-2007 of all congenital vaginal obstructions that were surgically treated at Children Hospital N.1, patients with cloaca, persistence of urogenital sinus were excluded. RESULTS There were 52 girls treated for congenital vaginal obstructions. The clinical features consisted of abdominal pain, voiding dysfunctions, and vulvar bulge. The vaginal anomalies consisted of 28 cases of imperforated hymen (54%) that were treated by hymenotomy; 4 cases of transverse vaginal septum (8%): 3 vaginoplasties were performed with the abdominoperineal approach and 1 with only perineal approach; 9 vaginal atresias (17%) were treated with vaginoplasty by abdominoperineal approach; 11 unilateral hematocolpos (21%) were treated with 6 hemihysterectomies by abdominal approach and 5 transvaginal excision of the septum. CONCLUSIONS The common clinical features of congenital vaginal obstructions consisted of abdominal pain, voiding dysfunctions and vulvar bulge.
