Chronic pain is a known risk factor for suicide in the general population and in psychiatric samples. It is estimated that one third of chronic pain patients report suicidal ideation and that such patients have a 2-fold risk of death by suicide. Chronic pain, and chronic pain with comorbid psychiatric disturbance are common conditions among US military veterans and are gaining increased attention in the area of veteran suicide prevention.
