Abstract

Pain is often underestimated and poorly managed; therefore, the identification of methods to improve understanding of patients’ pain experiences and providers’ pain management strategies is crucial. Perspective-taking (imagining how the other’s suffering could affect his/her life) serves as a potential method by which to improve pain-related clinical decision making. The aim of the current study was to use virtual human (VH) technology to examine whether a brief, perspective-taking intervention impacts pain management decisions to begin to address the lack of evidence-based interventions.
