Abstract
Preterm birth (PTB) is associated with activation of the inflammatory cascade, and with altered cytokine profile. Statins have well-established anti-inflammatory properties independent of their lipid lowering action. We hypothesized that statins prevent the inflammatory response associated with PTB. The objective of this study was to determine whether pravastatin (Pra; water soluble, poor placental transfer) or simvastatin (Sim; lipid soluble, crosses placenta) prevent the inflammatory response using a mouse model of PTB induced by lipopolysaccharides (LPS).
