Abstract

Concerns about the cognitive capacity of minors to provide informed assent for treatments with permanent effects and the risk of future regret if gender identity changes, have led to governmental restrictions on gender-affirming treatment of minors. However, among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adults, only 13% reported a history of going back to living as their sex assigned at birth at least for a little while, including 8% who discontinued gender-affirming hormones. Only 2% reported fluctuation in gender identity as a reason to discontinue social or medical transition.
