Abstract

Quasi-statical shape change of vesicle membranes is studied by using phase field method. Variational problems on the forms under constraints of surface area β and volume α are solved using the potential energy proposed by Du et al. With comparing between a structural change from a ball shape with increasing surface area and that from a doughnut shape with decreasing surface area, a hysteresis behavior is observed. A drastic change in energy occurs at critical point where the topological change of shape occurs. It is shown that the point corresponds with a limit between reversible and irreversible deformation.
