Abstract

The 500 kV SF/sub 6/ gas insulated substation (GIS) at the Itaipu hydroelectric station, located on the border between Brazil and Paraguay, comprises 52 circuit breakers. The first portion, including 14 circuit breakers and associated equipment has been erected, tested and placed into operation. The authors describe the installation, review reasons for the selection of GIS, provide statistics on test results, and discuss problems encountered and solutions adopted. They also suggest some conceptual modifications. >
