Abstract

The study is focused on identifying effect of working environment on job stress for the nurses affiliated in hospitals with less than 500 beds. The research design was descriptive study. The data was collected using a structured self-report questionnaire via online survey. The data was collected and analyzed from 348 subjects. To identify the effect on job stress, following sub-domains of nurse work environment was analyzed using multiple regression: competency of nursing manager, safety management system, support system, personal characteristics, job-related characteristics and hospital-related characteristics. The result shows job position, number of beds, competency of nursing manager, support system are significant (F=18.540, p=<.001), Adj R2 = .431). For the job position factor, job stress of staff nurse was showed higher than that of nursing manager. For the hospital size factor, job stress of the nurses who work in hospital with 100~300 beds and 300~500 beds was showed higher than that of the nurses who work in hospital with less than 100 beds. For the work environment factor, job stress of nurses decreased as the nurses perceive positively about competency of nursing manager and support system. It is expected to be used as fundamental information on nurse job stress and human resource management for hospitals with less than 500 beds.
