Abstract

This chapter will afford the reader valuable information and case examples of state-of-the-art burn care philosophy, management, and application as it relates to reconstruction of the head and neck. In particular, this chapter is a substantial update in content from the fourth edition and highlights significant advances in burn care management and new treatment modalities that are of particular importance in this very special and challenging anatomic region. The case examples provided will illustrate intriguing and convincing evidence of how state-of-the-art burn care in the head and neck should be approached and delivered. It is our hope that novice readers will find this chapter useful in increasing their fund of knowledge and help them to understand essential principles and fundamentals. It is also our hope that seasoned burn surgeons, plastic surgeons, and care providers will carefully consider the newer concepts presented and incorporate them into their practice, resulting in improved outcomes and decreased morbidity for patients with burn deformities of the head and neck.
